At the tip of Yeongdo Island, Taejongdae Park combines granite cliffs, dense forest and a historic lighthouse overlooking the Korean Sea. A 4 km coastal circuit, also accessible by small train, for the most striking natural views in Busan.

Taejongdae is a natural park located at the southern tip of Yeongdo Island in Busan. Its granite cliffs plunge directly into the Korean Sea, offering raw panoramas over the ocean and, on clear days, views of the Japanese coast. The site blends dense forest, coastal trails and a historic lighthouse, making it one of the city's most cherished natural retreats.

Practical Information at a Glance

  • Admission: Paid (adult rate, reduced for children and seniors)
  • Access: Bus from central Busan to the Taejongdae stop; the park has a small tourist train (Danubi) that loops around the site
  • Suggested duration: 2 to 3 hours for the full circuit
  • Footwear: Walking shoes recommended on the coastal trails
  • Accessibility: The Danubi train allows you to visit the main points without walking

What to See

The park revolves around a coastal circuit of approximately 4 kilometers. Black granite cliffs dominate the sea and form the visual heart of the site. Taejongdae Lighthouse, built during the Japanese colonial era, stands on the most advanced promontory. A small pebble beach, Sinseondae, stretches at the foot of the rocks. A forest of pine and oak trees covers the interior of the peninsula.

History and Context

The name "Taejongdae" refers to King Taejong of the Silla Dynasty, who allegedly practiced archery on this promontory. The site has been designated a natural monument of Corée du Sud. The current lighthouse dates from the early 20th century and guided ships entering Busan Harbor, one of Asia's busiest ports.

Highlights of Your Visit

The Cliffs and Main Viewpoint

The viewpoint overlooking the cliffs is the central moment of the visit. The jagged rocks, battered by waves, form a striking contrast with the forest above. On clear days, the horizon sometimes reveals a glimpse of the Japanese island of Tsushima.

Taejongdae Lighthouse

The lighthouse is accessible on foot from the main viewpoint. Its integrated museum traces Busan's maritime history. The view from its immediate surroundings over the open sea is unobstructed in all directions.

Sinseondae Beach

This pebble beach, nestled between the cliffs, is accessible by stairs from the main trail. The spot is peaceful, away from the tourist crowds at the viewpoint. Local legend says that fairies once descended to bathe here.

The Danubi Train

This small electric train loops around the park with several stops. It's useful for visitors who want to see the entire site without walking the full circuit, particularly families with young children or people with reduced mobility.

Photography Tips

Morning light is softer on the cliffs, which face generally south and west. Golden hour in late afternoon colors the granite rocks beautifully. Avoid days with frequent sea mist common in summer: visibility over the horizon is then nonexistent. No known photography restrictions within the park.

Location and Access

Taejongdae is located at the tip of Yeongdo Island, connected to central Busan by a bridge. From the Nampo-dong district, several bus lines serve the park directly. The journey by bus from downtown takes approximately 30 to 40 minutes depending on traffic. The park is not served by the metro; the bus remains the most direct option. The internal Danubi train compensates for the lack of metro access to get around within the site.

Nearby

  • Yeongdo Bridge — historic Busan bridge, the essential passage to reach the island from downtown.
  • Jagalchi Market — Corée du Sud's largest fish market, located on the Nampo-dong waterfront.
  • Gamcheon Cultural Village — district with colorful terraced houses, nicknamed the "Machu Picchu of Busan".
  • Busan Tower — panoramic tower in Yongdusan Park, in the heart of the historic district.

On very clear days, the island of Tsushima (Japan) is visible on the horizon from the main viewpoint. This phenomenon remains rare and depends on the atmospheric conditions of the day.

From Yeongdo, reach Nampo-dong by bus to visit Jagalchi Market and Busan Tower on the same day. Gamcheon Village is accessible by bus from Nampo-dong.

Yes. The Danubi train avoids long walks. The coastal trails have railings at exposed points. Plan closed-toe shoes for children on rocky sections.

Food stands and a restaurant are present inside the park, particularly near the main viewpoint. The offering remains simple; for a full meal, Nampo-dong is better suited.
